How you can participate in Helping Babies Breathe
Where would you like to participate with Helping Babies Breathe?
HBB is designed for resource limited circumstances. Currently participating countries and contacts are listed on the contact page. If you are interested in teaching neonatal resuscitation in North America, or where ample resources for neonatal care exist, you should teach the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Visit www.aap.org/nrp for more information.
If you are interested in teaching HBB in a developing country or in resource limited situations, please continue on.
You can participate in many different ways:
Master trainer - Participate in a train-the-trainer workshop and make a commitment to training other trainers and facilitators. See contact page to receive more information about current efforts in the country you are interested in (see contact list).
Facilitator – Participate in a train-the-trainer workshop or a special session for policymakers and program managers. Work to advocate for neonatal resuscitation training and formulate a comprehensive and sustainable plan to deliver training. Who is your target audience for teaching HBB?
HBB is designed to be understood by Skilled Birth Attendants as defined by the WHO. (WHO defines a skilled attendant as “an accredited health professional – such as a midwife, doctor or nurse – who has been educated and trained to proficiency in the skills needed to manage normal (uncomplicated) pregnancies, childbirth and the immediate postnatal period, and in the identification, management and referral of complications in women and newborns”) Note that designations and requirements vary from country to country.
In certain circumstances the HBB curriculum may be successfully taught to traditional birth attendants as well. Please see the list of advisory committee or country program contacts if you would like to discuss this further with someone who is familiar with the HBB curriculum.
Have you identified partners to support the implementation of Helping Babies Breathe?
A core planning team at the regional or national level should include the Ministry of Health, professional societies, NGOs, and other key stakeholders who should work cooperatively to plan future training.

Do you already teach other health programs such as Essential Newborn Care or Integrated Management of Childhood Illness?
Helping Babies Breathe was designed to work in many different ways. It can easily be integrated into a larger neonatal health program, taught side-by-side with other programs, or it can be used as a stand alone educational program for neonatal resuscitation.
Steps to take to become involved:
- Contact those in your country of interest who are already working on HBB if you have questions.
- Network with your colleagues at your proposed location and participate in a training session.
- If HBB is not already well developed in your country of interest, encourage and facilitate in-country contacts with the MOH, USAID missions, NGOs, and other key stakeholders.
- When you have done your preliminary planning work and are ready to begin teaching, register on this website [http://helpingbabiesbreathe.org/registerCourse.html]
- Come back to the website on a regular basis for updates to country activity, to learn from what other countries are doing, and share your own experiences.
